Genetic Consultation

Genetic Consultation - Genetics Counselor Programs

A genetic consultation can help you understand why your pregnancy is high risk as well as the prenatal care options available. This is an important step in making the right treatment decisions and preparations for the future.

You may be referred for genetic consultation if you have:

Genetic counselors are trained (certified or in the process of getting certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling) to guide you through the entire process so that you can feel comfortable and confident about the prenatal care you are receiving.

What type of training do genetic counselors receive?

A genetic counselor is a health care professional with a Master’s Degree in Human Genetics and Counseling. This training enables him/her to discuss technical genetic information in practical, useful terms. These professionals are supervised by Medical Geneticists, who are available for in-person consultation as needed.

Genetic Counselors: Helping You Get Specialized Prenatal Care and Treatment

Spotting during pregnancy, cramping in the first trimester, pregnant mothers above the age of 35, and family medical history of genetic defects raise concerns about chromosomal abnormalities and pre-term babies.

This can be unsettling for the mother-to-be and the entire family. Worry and stress can complicate things. Genetic counselors help you understand the risks and identify your genetic prenatal testing options. Which type of genetic testing you choose is entirely up to you.

What our patients say

"I just wanted to say THANK YOU. I have read up on quite a bit of expecting moms experiences with their ultrasounds around the country and they were less then favorable, some horrible. But our (my husband and I) visit to your Baptist office was wonderful. The office is nice and decor is great. The tech was patient and educated. She answered all our questions, some before we even asked. She gave us her undivided attention and took her time. I am looking forward to my next appointment. Great service provided!" Ronnita W.,  Miami
